For our family and many others, the long Labor Day weekend signifies the official end of the summer season. With fall, football and all things pumpkin right around the corner, the long weekend provides the perfect opportunity to get in one last quick trip before busy fall schedules kick into high gear. We’ve got a great list of West Texas hot spots that are family and budget friendly. Take a look! FOR A NIGHT OR TWO AWAY: HOTEL TURKEY, Turkey, TX Why in the world would anyone visit Turkey, Texas for the weekend? Because of this hidden gem! Recently renovated and still family owned, Hotel Turkey is almost 100 years old! Grab a margarita and enjoy live music by West Texas artists on the patio from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night. For outdoor adventures, Caprock Canyons State Park is a short 15-minute drive up the road. THE BARFIELD, Amarillo, TX The Barfield, Autograph Collection is a luxury hotel that embodies the heritage and culture of the Texas Panhandle. Located in the heart of downtown Amarillo, The Barfield is one of the first luxury boutique hotels in West Texas. Grab a drink at the Paramount Recreation Club, a Prohibition-era speakeasy known as the “worst kept secret” in Amarillo. Catch an Amarillo Sod Poodles minor league baseball game at HodgeTown Stadium a few blocks south in downtown Amarillo. COTTON COURT HOTEL, Lubbock, TX Check out this “city-inspired” boutique hotel experience in the heart of downtown Lubbock. Located on historic Broadway, the hotel is minutes away from the Depot District with its shops, restaurants, bars, and nightlife. The unique design is a nod to Lubbock’s rich history in the cotton industry and the region’s Great Plains roots across West Texas. Our beloved Texas Tech Red Raiders kickoff their season on Saturday, September 3rd and “The Jones” is just one short mile up the road from this one-of-a-kind hotel. FOR A QUICK DAY TRIP: PALO DURO CANYON, Canyon, TX Make a quick day trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park! Located just 14 miles outside of Canyon, the Park offers some of the most spectacular and scenic landscape in West Texas. With a descent of some 800 feet to the canyon floor and more than 16 miles of paved road, Palo Duro Canyon State Park offers fantastic scenic views, miles of hiking and biking trails, horseback riding and camping accommodations. Our favorite family-friendly hike is a 3-mile trek to the Lighthouse, the most famous rock formation in the entire park. Farmhouse Vineyards, Brownfield, TX This is the BEST place to have a glass of wine in West Texas! Stop by their tasting room, Whitehouse Parker, for a glass (or two, or three) of their award-winning wine. The Prohibition Rose´ and the Boyfriend are our favorites. The Parker, as she is affectionately known, has roots as deep as the Oak trees she was built behind. Grab your girlfriends and head to Brownfield for an afternoon of delicious wine tasting. Stop by on a Saturday evening and you might be lucky enough to catch live music on the outdoor patio. If you’re headed out on a Labor Day Get Away be sure to check out season two of The Spirit of West Texas Podcast. It’s available now on your favorite podcast streaming platform. We hope you’ll take advantage of all the beauty, creativity, and adventure West Texas has to offer this Labor Day weekend. Safe travels!
